    Ichirin-zashi is a vase for inserting a single flower. It can be traced from Sei Shonagon's essay "The Pillow Book" that the custom of viewing flowers by inserting them in a Ichirin-zashi vase had already begun in the Heian period (running from 794 to 1185).
